Agency Description & How the Trust has helped Bethany House
Bethany House of Laredo is a local non-profit organization founded by Father Charles McNaboe with the mission “to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless”. For more than 33 years, and thanks to a loyal community support, the agency has served the indigent, homeless and at-risk individuals and families by providing them with an avenue to become self-sufficient.
Today, Bethany House is an entity that prepares more than 30,000 meals each month and through shelter and supportive services, has become a center for opportunities for men, women and families who have fallen upon difficult times.
With the Barbara A. Kazen Center for Hope and its additional shelter space, the Lamar Bruni Vergara Community Shelter has become a safe haven for homeless women, providing 10 beds for emergency shelter as well as a space for recreation and respite for children and families residing at Bethany House.
However, it is the support to the most vulnerable of all, our children, where the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust makes its greatest impact. Through the years, their invaluable contributions to our educational programs such as ‘Luz de Esperanza’, ensures that our children, regardless of their present circumstances, can be prepared for school and life success. Thanks to the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust, Bethany House can offer quality educational instruction every Saturday morning as well as transportation and meals to more than 35 kids that are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, a stranger you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me…whatever you did for these least brothers of mine you did for me.”
Matthew 25:35, 36, 40
